Eating out at Matadero Madrid

If you are planning a cultural visit to the Matadero Madrid Contemporary Creation Centre , which has the best immersive exhibitions, the most avant-garde theatre, films, documentaries and almost any type of event, you should definitely plan on grabbing a bite to eat either before or afterwards. Here are a few of the options for eating out in this area, even within the centre itself, designed for all tastes.

INSIDE MATADERO MADRID

In this restored space that was once the boiler room of the municipal slaughterhouse, located next to Cineteca Madrid, is La Cantina. An avant-garde space where you can enjoy the cuisine devised by the culinary project Olivia te Cuida, ideal for those who like to eat homemade, healthy, organic food with a gourmet touch. Cantina (Cineteca Madrid)

Located in Nave 12 at Matadero Madrid is Café Naves, a perfect place to recharge your batteries during a cultural visit to the centre. Recently redesigned by British creators Morag Myerscough & Luke Morgan and architect Paula López Barba, it offers organic home-made food by La Francachela. It has a café restaurant and a stage for theatre and music performances.

WORLD CUISINE RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER

At No. 69 Paseo de la Chopera, right by Cineteca Madrid, is this traditional Argentine restaurant serving flame-grilled meat and side dishes. For lovers of intense flavour, its menu includes Black Angus rump cap steak from Canada. It also has an extensive wine menu, with wines from Spain, Argentina and the rest of the world.

A two minute walk from Matadero Madrid, at No. 3 Calle del Maestro Arbós, this restaurant specialises in hot pot, a typical Chinese dish that has become very popular in Madrid. Located in Legazpi, the restaurant is adorned with strings of lights and lanterns, and has become a huge hit among fans of this warming broth-based dish that is always bursting with flavour and fresh and healthy ingredients. The menu also contains a wide variety of meat dishes, vegetables, seafood.

At No.4 Plaza del General Maroto, by the Manzanares river, this restaurant has been open since 2012, offering breakfasts, snacks, lunches, dinners, light bites and drinks, with a wide selection of international dishes. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a fun American style restaurant, where you can have anything from a delicious breakfast to evening drinks.

Located in the tourist area of Lavapiés, just 5 minutes from Matadero, the name of this restaurant refers to a greeting that can still be heard in the villages and rural areas of Argentina. Its cuisine captures the essence and expertise of those places, modernising recipes and giving them a gourmet touch, with homemade, natural, fresh and organic ingredients.

At no. 6 Calle de Manuel Aleixandre, this restaurant offers traditional Ecuadorian food to enjoy with family or friends. They serve breakfasts and set menus, taking you on a fascinating culinary journey through delicious homemade dishes with all the flavours of Ecuador. It is part of a chain of Ecuadorian restaurants with more than 20 years of experience in Spain.

At No. 139 Paseo de las Delicias, you will find this casual restaurant that opened in 2018, serving typical Mexican street food. This is not your run-of-the-mill taquería, however; all the flavours of Mexico are very present in each of its dishes, such as traditional tequeños, chicharrones, quesadillas, burritos and nachos.

You can find the best dishes from the Dominican Republic at No. 3 Calle San Evaristo, in the neighbourhood of Legazpi. A small, simple restaurant, ideal for family meals out, specialising in typical dishes from the Dominican Republic.

At number 2 Plaza de Rutilio Gacis, this bar with outdoor seating area offers an eclectic menu of international cuisine with appetisers and main dishes. From lighter bites and snacks to meals, you can choose from delicacies such as squid with aioli, grilled pig's ear, tuna tartar, guacamole, prawns, or its house salmorejo (thick chilled tomato soup) with egg and ham.

Located at No. 4 Calle del Bronce, a short distance from Matadero, this restaurant serves typical cuisine from the region of Asturias. All the dishes on its extensive menu are made using high quality ingredients, with many traditional regional dishes such as fabada and cachopo, offering an extensive variety, as well as a selection of meat and fish dishes and delicious desserts. Its house specialities include stone-cooked genuine Asturian veal.

La Madreña

At No. 20 Granito, this intimate, minimalist restaurant is run by brothers Sergio and Mario Tofé. Included in the Michelin Guide, this unique restaurant in Legazpi has a waiting list since it only has five tables accommodating up to 18 people. Its exclusive creative cuisine can be sampled through two tasting menus.

At Latxaska Etxea, every day they strive to bring the best Basque cuisine to Madrid. The restaurant is at No. 8 Paseo del Molino and serves seasonal cuisine made using premium ingredients. The menu includes meat and fish cooked on over oak charcoal, which adds a distinctive touch. And it has a unique selection of wines from the best DOs.
