Edificato nel 1912 nell’antico palazzo dei Duchi di Medinaceli, con un arredamento nello stile dei grandi edifici parigini della Belle Époque, l’Hotel Palace diventò sin dagli inizi l’hotel più grande e lussuoso d’Europa. Da allora è stato uno spettatore eccezionale della vita sociale e culturale della città, oltre che un riferimento politico, economico e sociale.
Sin dagli inizi l’hotel fu molto frequentato da artisti, intellettuali e politici. Nei suoi archivi si ricordano nomi conosciuti come il pittore Ignacio de Zuloaga, che rese il Palace il suo domicilio di Madrid; lo scrittore Vicente Blasco Ibáñez o la misteriosa Mata-Hari, il cui spirito avventuriero, dicono, vaga ancora in alcune delle sue stanze. Buster Keaton, Pablo Picasso, Federico García Lorca o Luis Buñuel furono altri ospiti importanti.
Più avanti l’hotel ricevette Dolores del Río e la bellissima María Félix, Orson Welles con Rita Hayworth, Hemingway e i suoi famosi martini dry, mentre toreri come Belmonte, El Gallo o Manolete uscivano dal Palace con i loro vestiti lucenti nel Camino de Las Ventas. Tra i più conosciuti c’è sicuramente Salvador Dalí, negli anni in cui era ancora sconosciuto.
In occasione della sua ultima ristrutturazione, l'hotel ha integrato le ultime tendenze in fatto di tecnologia e benessere con l'ambiente e la sua eredità storica. Le sue 470 camere e suite sono completamente attrezzate per soddisfare le esigenze dei viaggiatori di oggi, compreso il lussuoso letto Heavenly® Bed e l'innovativo bagno Heavenly® Bath.
The Westin Palace è uno storico luogo di incontro e attualmente il più grande spazio per eventi del centro di Madrid, con 20 sale multifunzionali che possono ospitare fino a 800 persone.
Nel 2023 è stato premiato come miglior business hotel della Spagna ai World Travel Awards.
