The new season at the Teatro Real hosts the adaptation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's great choral opera in a semi-staged concerto version by musical conductor, René Jacobs, on 23 January, with musical performances by the Zürcher Sing-Akademie and the Freiburger Barockorchester.
This mythological play tells the story of King Idomeneo's pact with Neptune after the Trojan War. If he won, he would sacrifice his son Idamante. First performed in Munich in 1781, Mozart's Idomeneo, re di Creta is full of Gluckian reformist ideals and is the composer's most ambitious and original opera seria.
With the life of his son hanging over the plot - finally resolved by the eighteenth-century convention of the deus ex machina - the score is elevated by the individual characterisation of its characters and the integration of the arias into a musical dialogue that is complemented by dramatic choral and orchestral episodes. It is a plea for compassion and empathy as revulsion against war wounds.
