Every year, Fundación Casa de México in Spain throws a huge celebration to mark the Day of the Dead. From 2 October to 10 November you can visit the Altar of the Dead inspired by the journey from the world of the dead to the world of the living through the senses. This year’s altar has been designed by Eugenio Caballero, one of Mexico’s most prominent artistic directors. As well as the altar, the foundation is putting on many more activities for you to learn all about this lovely tradition.
In 2024, Fundación Casa de México in Spain is presenting the seventh edition of its famous Altar of the Dead, which this year features a design by Eugenio Caballero, renowned Oscar-winning Mexican artistic director who specialises in set design. Casa de México will be decorated all across the front of the building, through the stairs and hallways up to the second floor. For the first time this year, visitors will not only be able to see the altar but also experience it with their other senses, such as hearing and smell.
The design of the altar and the different spaces is inspired by the journey through limbo that the deceased have to make, from the world of the dead to the world of the living and vice versa. The centrepiece of the altar is a drawing by the great artist Javier Martínez Pedro with a design inspired by the journey that begins with death and brings us back to life symbolised in the offering. Duality is a concept that is very present in this journey, life and death, day and night, moon and sun, heaven and underworld, which will be reflected in the different spaces.
On the 13 and 27 October, there will be a family film festival entitled Adventures of Other Worlds at which the film Salma's Big Wish (Día de muertos) (Carlos Gutiérrez Medrano, Mexico, 2019) will be screened. It tells the story of a small town where spirits return once a year during the Day of the Dead. Salma, 16, is the only one who cannot bring anyone back because she does not know the whereabouts or identity of her parents. One day, Salma and her friends Jorge and Pedro find a clue that takes them down a path full of adventures.
