Il Pomo d’Oro directed by Francesco Corti will give a single performance of an adaptation in concerto version of the famous sorceress Alcina, on 15 December at the Teatro Real.
Composed by Georg Friedrich Händel, this dramatic opera in three acts tells the story of the sorceress Alcina and her magical island. The performance is loosely based on Ludovico Ariosto’s epic poem, Orlando Furioso, and explores themes like love, magic, beauty, illusion and redemption.
It tells how Ruggiero, a knight in love with Bradamante, arrives on Alcina’s island, who seduces him and makes him one of her many captivated lovers. Bradamante, disguised as a man called Ricciardo, also arrives on the island in search of her beloved. Bradamante meets Morgana, Alcina's sister, who is also in love with Ruggiero. Morgana tells Bradamante of Alcina's true nature and helps her find Ruggiero. But Alcina discovers Bradamante's trickery and locks her in a castle.
