The greenhouse and botanical gardens span an area of 7,100 square metres and are located within the former municipal slaughterhouse in the Arganzuela district. They were designed by architect Luis Bellido y González and constructed between 1908 and 1928.
In 1992, the site was restored and repurposed as a greenhouse, drawing inspiration from the 19th-century greenhouses found in parks across European cities like Vienna and London. These structures are representative examples of 19th-century cast-iron architecture.
The greenhouse features a central stage surrounded by four enclosed areas, each representing different microclimates and housing a variety of plants: two tropical, one subtropical, and one desert species. Additionally, it includes sheets of water, fountains, estuaries and aquariums populated with fish from various habitats.
