Born in Tbilisi (Georgia) in 1945, the pianist and teacher, Elisabeth Leonskaja, is considered to be a leading pianist on the international scene. She began her career at the age of eleven with her first performance. In 1964, she began her musical studies at the Moscow Conservatory, before settling in Vienna (Austria) in 1978.
In 1979, she became known to the whole world at the Salzburg Festival, starting a prolific career that has led her to work with great orchestras, such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Vienna Symphonic or the Munich Philharmonic. She has also performed with conductors like Kurt Masur, Colin Davis, Cristoph Eschenbach, Kurt Sanderling, Mariss Jansons and Yuri Temirkanov, among others.
On the other hand, over the last four decades, Leonskaja has specialised in the compositions of Russian musicians from the Soviet period, such as Oistrakh, Richter or Gilels. Since 2002, she has been a resident artist at the Konzerthaus in Dortmund.
