Revised opening hours: due to heritage preservation work on the building, new opening and closing times are now in effect until further notice. The space will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 12pm to 8pm and on Sundays from 12pm to 6pm. It will remain closed Monday through Thursday.
This new cultural centre run by Madrid City Council aims to become a meeting point for cultural agents and professionals and a leading venue in the city, within the context of Paseo del Arte - Art Walk and Barrio de las Letras (Literary Quarter), where it is located. Its facilities make it the perfect venue to showcase Madrid's creative dynamism around art, music, design, literature, image and gastro-culture.
The unique industrial building in which this venue is housed, built in the early 20th Century, was once the premises of the Serrería Belga sawmill. An important example of industrial construction and one of the exceptional properties that make up Madrid’s Landscape of Light, named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 25 July 2021.
Following the complete renovation of the building, this area of nearly 4000 m2 is dedicated to offering a broad cultural offer, with a whole floor covering more than 300 m2 for artistic exhibitions and a large area dedicated to poetry, literature, and the role of Madrid as literary capital throughout the centuries.
All activities at the Serrería Belga Cultural Space are free, although tickets must be booked in advance through its official website www.serreria-belga.es or at https://tienda.madrid-destino.com/es.
ESPACIO LETRAS
Located underneath the Plaza de Las Letras, this is a versatile and flexible exhibition space within the Serrería Belga cultural centre, where Madrid and its literature provides the central theme of the various exhibitions it will host.
The space has six exhibition elements, two of which are dual in nature. They are six structures made to look like large 3D books on which graphic and textual content is displayed through the use of mobile panels to expand the contents. Each of them is dedicated to a literary movement linked to Madrid and, in particular, to the Barrio de las Letras or Literary Quarter: Golden Age, Romanticism, Realism and Naturalism, Modernism and 19th Century, the Generation of ’98, and the Generation of ‘27.
Espacio Letras opens with the exhibition Madrid, literary muse, delving into the literary history of the city, highlighting especially the works and authors linked to the Barrio de las Letras, as well as in the origins of the building in which this cultural space is located, all in a playful and participatory way.
